This case marks the first time a racial abuse incident in football has reached a Spanish court. Inaki Williams reported alleged racist abuse towards his teammate Maroan Sannadi during a match against Espanyol last season. The incident drew attention to racism in Spanish stadiums.
Racism in Spanish stadiums has been a growing concern since Real Madrid's Brazilian forward Vinicius Jr accused LaLiga and Spain of racism in 2023. He was subjected to slurs during a match at Valencia's Mestalla stadium. Several fans have since been handed sentences for racially abusing Vinicius.
The defendant in the Williams case agreed to pay a fine and accepted a three-year ban from football stadiums, as well as a five-year disqualification from working in education or sports-related professions. Under Spanish law, prison sentences under two years for non-violent crimes are typically suspended for first-time offenders.
Inaki Williams reflected on the incident, saying he felt saddened by the racist insults. He emphasized that football is a team sport meant to be played in a friendly atmosphere.
