The police initially reported that 65 people were injured in the incident, but later revised the number to 79 after identifying more people who were hurt. Seven people are still in hospital after being struck by the car on Water Street on Monday evening.
The police have been granted an extension to keep the suspect in custody until Thursday. Under the law, police can keep someone in custody for up to 24 hours without charge, and a superintendent can extend this by 12 hours. If necessary, the police can apply to a magistrates' court for a further 12-hour extension, up to a maximum of 96 hours.
The police have said that they are making good progress in their investigation to understand what happened, and they are appealing for people not to speculate or share distressing content online.
Detective Superintendent Rachel Wilson said that the police are supporting those who are still in hospital and are grateful for the cooperation from people who witnessed the incident. She encouraged anyone who may have information to come forward and contact the police.
