According to reports, United proposed Onana to the Hammers before they signed Leicester City's Mads Hermansen as their new goalkeeper.

However, West Ham declined the offer, feeling that Onana was not significantly better than their current first-choice goalkeeper, Alphonse Areola.

Following this, West Ham proceeded to sign Hermansen from Leicester City.

Both Onana and Hermansen have made errors in goal this season, with Onana also making a mistake in his return to action in United's Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby in the midweek match.
