Rashford is currently in Spain to finalize a loan move to Barcelona, after being listed for transfer and having his No. 10 shirt taken away at the end of last season.
Rashford spent the second half of last season on loan with Aston Villa, following a disagreement with manager Ruben Amorim.
Ferdinand shared his thoughts on his YouTube channel, saying, "There must have been a lot going on behind the scenes that we're not aware of."
"Marcus isn't someone who likes to talk and do interviews, so we have to respect that," he added.
Ferdinand wondered what could have led to Rashford's desire to leave Manchester United, a club known for producing great players from its academy.
"Is it due to a lack of form or confidence? Mismanagement? Or has the club failed him?" Ferdinand asked.
"Are there issues we don't know about, such as injuries? Has he lost the desire to play at a high level?" Ferdinand questioned.
