Liverpool nearly responded quickly through Dominik Szoboszlai, but a heroic block by Benoît Badiashile denied what seemed like a certain goal. Chelsea's relentless off-the-ball work was frustrating the Reds, who impressed in flashes but struggled to capitalize on their chances in the final third.
At halftime, Liverpool's coach, Arne Slot, introduced Florian Wirtz in an attempt to inject fresh attacking energy into the team. Wirtz's introduction almost paid off immediately, as he found Mohamed Salah inside the area within 20 seconds of the restart. However, Salah's shot sailed wide of the post.
It wasn't until shortly after the hour mark that Liverpool finally broke through Chelsea's defense. Alexander Isak's header brought down a cross from Dominik Szoboszlai, but before he could shoot, Cody Gakpo pounced and scored to level the scores.
However, Chelsea's momentum continued in the closing stages. With their two starting center backs injured, Liverpool had the initiative, but it was Chelsea who looked more likely to take all three points. Jamie Gittens, Caicedo, and Estêvão all forced Liverpool's goalkeeper into smart saves in the final 10 minutes.
Chelsea's persistence ultimately paid off in stoppage time when Estêvão slid in at the far post to turn home Marc Cucurella's delivery, securing a stoppage-time defeat for Liverpool for the second consecutive weekend.
